This overcompensate to get up is likewise coupled with the right not to self-organize or to join any organization of the same nature at the election of the employee and upon his own volition. The proposed rule would now have the provident task, as pointed out in the dissenting opinion of Brian Hayes, that the Board is not given the power under the NLRA to address acts of noncompliance. In fact, this was quite unlike the situation in other countries where women did not receive so many rights equal to the men in the society (Tyldesley, n.d.). In countries like Egypt, as has been considered for the particular study, the status of women is considered as a measure and level of modernity. This leads to the development of policy measures and other practices within the society. Thus sexuality has always played a significant role in the Muslim societies of such countries (Sali, 2010). In the present times, the women in Egypt have to deal with the changes in the companionable institutions prevailing in the country that have initiated in the country post modernity (Lewis and Micklewrig ht, 2006). However, in malignity of women gaining rights in the country in the earlier times, in time reports in the present times reflect that women are losing their rights as against the men in the country and are being tried to be dominated by the males in the society. Part I Womens Rights in Egypt Place of women in Egypt in the final 100 years Beginning of 20th Century Considering the last 100 years, the Egyptian women could never be seen or heard. However through the recent revolutions, women proved this wrong by presenting themselves and their struggles in front of the public thereof altering the conditions of the women in the society. With the revolution during the Mubarak regime, the women participated more in different activities within the society along with performing their roles in their families (Jones, 2012). Before modernism, although the women were not equal with the men, alleviate they had certain rights for themselves. Such rights were associated with the marr iages, finances, courts, and divorces that were much higher in comparison with several other civilizations across the world (Deif, 2004). With the mass uprising on the streets of Egypt during the Mubarak regime, the women in the country struggled and tried to gain rights in different fields thus trying to obtain equality with the men in the country. As far as the perplex of women in Egypt is concerned, it was found to be unique since such rights, as mentioned above, were not prevalent in the other civilizations in the ancient times. The legal and economic rights that they enjoyed were akin to that of the men in their country, although such rights were mostly associated with their status in the society, the link of which could not be determined though (Otto, 2010). Their position in the society depended on their social rank irrespective of the gender of the individual. However on one hand, while moving from one social rank to the other, women could move along with their husbands on the other hand, it was possible that a man could divorce his wife and marry someone else who could then get that rank that her husband held in the society. In spite of these differences and status of the women, still in the ancient time in Egypt, self-made women could be found (Picone, 2012). Egypt has certainly been one of the countries that provided the women with certain rights. This is evident from the following rights that the women undergo in the country of Egypt. The women in Egypt had certain rights for their academic achievements. Education was seen by the public as extremely important for women that can lead to

What caused the Vietnam War (1964-1973) - Essay ExampleHistorians gauge the impact of the Vietnam date not only on casualty figure and geographic coverage but also on its length, intensity and global repercussions. For instance, the state of war in Vietnam vie a great importance in the geopolitical sense since it became a flashpoint in the Cold War. Furthermore, the war took place in a annoyed period of human history and became intertwined with other social upheavals which almost brought down the American body politic. The aim of this paper is to analyze the roots and the underlying factors that lead to the US intervention in the Vietnam conflict. In the process, it is hoped that this would shed light to the phenomenon which marked significant failures specifically in US international policies and the end-result of the nine-year conflict.Looking back at history, one will find that the US interest in Vietnam did not start with the administrations of John F. Kennedy and Dwight D. Eisenhower. It started with the American policy of containment in the aftermath of the Second world War against the spread of communism and the growing power of the USSR. Andrew Wiest (2002) explored this aspect in his book, The Vietnam WarIn each case the scale of the threats precluded the use of massive force, so avoiding the buildup to a nuclear exchange. The US chose to adopt a policy of limited war, hoping to avoid a superpower showdown and in many ways the war in Vietnam became the main example of the US limited war policy.2After the fall of imperial Japan, Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the independence of Democratic body politic of Vietnam and drafted a constitution along with a form of government based on the American model, hoping for a continued American support. Cultural Identity Narrative Rubric Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Cultural Identity Narrative Rubric - Essay modellingSince the pick out of this dish combines twain completely different and complimenting meals, some whitethorn be confuse whether it is a rice like prevention or cake like rice or both Rice and cake dont even serve the same purpose in a conventional feast, with the former being the main course and the latter being the sweet dish or the dessert that is to be served after the main course. In this sense, the name makes it sound like a dish that has mixed the main course with the dessert, that is quite insane to happen. I have resolved to discuss the Korean rice-cake for two main reasons first, my father owns a Korean rice-cake company that was previously run by my grandfather and his father even before him. So this company has even served three generations of my family. Secondly, I indirect request to solve the mystery of its name that I am sure many would like me to do. Along the way, I shall tell you what it is, why it is popula r among the Koreans and how to cook it. I shall also briefly discuss my future plans of making this dish a specialty of our company. Rice-cake is an umbrella term for a manakin of foods made in rice that are given a compact form so that they look like a compact pastry. So it is fundamentally a main course meal that looks like a piece of cake. It is not actually a cake Rice-cake recipes are made from rice. Rice may be boiled or fried with vegetables. It is pretty much usual rice we eat but when the scattered rice are compacted, it does not exclusively improve their texture but also enhances their aroma and taste. It makes the rice convenient to eat and elegant to present. Rice-cakes have a variety of benefits. They are energy boosters, low-spirited in calories, large in fiber con cristalt and great to the taste. Rice-cake is one of the very few things I can re shout from the days of my earliest childhood. I was only three years old when my father established a small rice-cake comp any. He started the business from a little shop in the respite of the market that was visible from the window of my room. Our apartment was just across the road. That shop paid my father off really good. Savings of the first month were ten times as much as what my father would save in a whole year before that. My father would often take me along while going to the shop. The aroma of fresh and tender rice still mesmerizes me. I was too little at that time, so my fathers friends and coworkers used to cuddle me. In their attempt to associate me with my fathers business, they would call me rice names. Rice cake, son of grains and Korean food were some of the names they would call me. It has always been an honor to be associated with rice since it has brought such a profitable business to my father. I am generally a reluctant eater, though saw no to rice-cake is impossible. I have grown up with this food. If there is one thing I am made up of, its rice-cake. It looks good, tastes good, smells good, feels good, what else can one want in a meal? When I was only a hundred days old, my family arranged a party, called Doljanchi, for me. It is a traditional Korean celebration of a childs hundredth day after birth. The number 100 has an inherent meaning of maturity and perfection, signifying a baby passes through perfection achievement safely as a human being (Life in Korea, n.d.). This day has special meaning in Korean culture, and some people believe that it is the time, beau ideal answers the parents

A Reflection on 'Fire On Marlborough Street' (Stanley J. Forman, 1975) Essay
A Reflection on Fire On Marlborough Street (Stanley J. Forman, 1975) - Essay ExampleUpon first looking at Fire On Marlborough Street, the action in the scene makes the nature of the photograph obviously disturbing. But there is more than to it than that. As viewers, especially as of late, we have seen scenes of death before. We have encountered photographs of war, holocaust, famine, crime, violence, etc. so the subject matter is not a new one. What makes Formans Fire On Marlborough Street a unique visual experience are trey things firstly, our knowledge of the facts leading up to the picture. Bryant and Jones were only seconds away from being safely rescued by a fireman, when the collapse of the unstable fire escape send them plummeting to the ground. Having to acknowledge the blink-of-an-eye immediacy of the event, even several decades later, leaves viewers shaking their heads in disbelief. Secondly, the historical significance of the photograph re intellects us that all too often favorable progress comes at a hefty price, and thirdly, the immediate in-your-face action that is so close up, engages and impacts the viewer on a personal and visceral level. forthright frozen in the middle of the picture, one of the victims (Bryant) seems to be protruding from the photograph, almost reaching out to the viewer. The near three-dimensional perspective of the action makes the photograph get on almost holographic. But what is the meaning behind Formans photograph, and what effect does it have on the viewing audience? The photo speaks to the fragility of life, and the ever so thin rakehell between hope and despair. It reminds us how fleeting life really is, and that each of us is just a collection of moments. The photo immediately registers in ones mind as being horrific, and we shudder at the thought of the end result, yet for some reason, a tragedy frozen in time compels, and even more so, allows us to look on. Risk factors for depression Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Risk factors for depression - Research Paper ExampleThe best treatment options are said to be the combination of two medications and psychotherapy, exactly electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is in addition an option when others do not work. Depression Evidences of Risk Factors, Signs and Symptoms, and Treatment Methods Introduction The human experience of sadness and gloom is normal among individuals, but it may be different once it becomes chronic and interferes with activities of daily living. Depression is one of the common causes in seeking professional psychologic function, and timely interventions could greatly help the depressed individual. Although depression may appear to be merely preoccupations of negative emotions, it can lead to dreadful effects, including suicide, once neglected. The diagnosis of depression may also be co-existing with other illnesses as well. It comes in different types with several signs and symptoms, and may be caused by a variety of elements, of w hich the present text will explore the risk factors associated with the condition using recent studies as evidences. Risk factors Numerous researches have been published to study risk factors of depression. In a 7-year longitudinal macrocosm study, Lorant et al. (2007) determined if longitudinal change in socio-economic factors affect change of depression level. Low socio-economic status, especially in the context of material standards of living, has constantly been associated with change magnitude relative incidence of depression. Results gathered show that a decline in socio-economic status is consequent to increased risks of depression, looking also into ceasing cohabitation with a partner and unemployment. Ceasing cohabitation with a partner increased risk levels of depression particularly among women and unemployment did not influence the level or risk of depression, in contrast to other cited studies, but with considerations of the research design and methods (p. 296). It is also seen that generally, the negative effects of worsening socio-economic conditions were greater than the positive effects when these conditions improved (p. 296). This study presents that socio-economic factors, including income, poverty, unemployment, education, and social relationships, are linked to prevalence of depression, where both have an in return proportional relationship. Netterstrom et al. (2008) focus on work-related psychosocial stressors in relation to the development of depression. Using several models, the authors review previous researches to assess such relationship, basing on either psychiatric scales, scales with with diagnostic classifications, or antidepressant prescription, or depression measured with a questionnaire (p. 121). According to the review, occupational psychosocial factors were associated with the development of depression, especially in instances where there are postgraduate psychological demands and low degree of social support (p. 126). Demands would, however, vary according to the muse and the work setting. This review, in accordance to the studies looked into, implies that an individuals work, especially job satisfaction and social support in such occupation, is linked to depression. When an individual feels satisfied and fulfilled with his or her job and receives positive reinforcement, there are lesser chances for depression, and vice versa.

Marshall McLuhans Theory Essay Example for Free
Marshall McLuhans Theory Es maintainHow might Marshall McLuhans theory of hot and cold media be used to in take a shit the surge of interest in erratic technology, especially school school text and film communicate?Any invention or technology is an extension or self-amputation of our psycheal bodies, and such extension also demands new ratios or new equilibriums among the some other organs and extensions of the body, Marshall McLuhan in Understanding Media (1964, p43). A comment which has possibly neer been truer than when understood with regard to a mobile ph unrivalled. McLuhans theories get to recently been given new life with the onset of the Internet however, they throne also be usefully applied to the massive explosion of mobile technology. Given it is a medium which some may account to be cool its impact on beau monde has been immeasurable. In todays society it is difficult to meet a person between the ages of fifteen and fifty who do not own a mobile phone. resembling televisions, it is the electronic accessory of the moment and it is advancing fast. Only five years ago text messaging was in its infancy and not all phones offered it picture messaging was unheard of. Nowadays picture messaging is very much here and already the technology has moved towards video messaging. Some mobile phones would be more accurately described as hand held computers as the telephony is only a fraction of its capabilities and often not even its main function. As with most mobile phones the main function consumers use is text messaging.According to McLuhan in Understanding Media (1964) the advent of a hot explosive medium privy cause drastic changes to politics and society. This can be seen in the effects that such technology has had on not only the telephone but the path people communicate in day to day life. However, when contrasted with a hot medium such as television or cinema, text and picture messaging be comparatively cool. They provide far less information and demand more participation from the receiver to fill in the gaps. Pictures received in messages atomic number 18 only small and very symbolic rather than detailed. There is also only limited space for text and language is often limited to abbreviations and annotation. Of draw when compargond to the standard telephone, mobile technology is considerably hotter, however, in order to stay within McLuhans theory, and for the medium to cause such a change in society, one would assume that the medium itself would need to be hotter.Such a change could be better explained and explored by the theories of Roland Barthes, especially his writings on myths and semiotics. In a collection of articles entitled Mythologies (1973) Barthes explores practical objects and their cultural meanings. Examining such objects as cars and haircuts he scrutinizes the signifiers and signs that they contain. Barthes begins by making explicit the meanings of app atomic number 18ntly neutral objects and then moves on to consider the social and historical conditions they obscure (McNeill 1996). He examined cars, comparing them to Gothic cathedrals, due to their uses over and above their basic functions. Cars carry status and tell a circulate slightly the person who owns them (Barthes 1973). Such meanings can also easily be drawn from mobile phones. Far more useful than assessing whether or not they are hot or cold, deeper more analytical conclusions can be derived from Barthes methods. By examining the semiotics of the medium its position in society and culture and its effects could be estimated. In Mythologies (1973) he argued that myth was a mode of signification. He argued that in myth, the link between the signifier and the signified was motivatedso that a culturally constructed sign becomes a signifier, thus allowing what is signified to become naturalised (Hartley 2002). Hartley goes on to apply this theory to brand named sports wear and their attached meanings. Such an application could be used with mobile technology as not only are in that location many different mobile phones with different functions but many different brands. Nokia, in particular, as the apparently leading brand, has different model phones which contain different signifiers. Some appear fun and contain lots of features and gadgets others appear sophisticated and look crafty and small. Others exist for practical purposes for uses who are less taken by mobile phone culture. Given the huge range of choice on offer, not besides by Nokia but all brands, the decision of which phone to purchase is an active one which takes serious contemplation. More can be said for a person who uses picture messaging. Society has not quite reached a stage where its considered a necessity like text messaging so those who do use it are those who are particularly interested in the culture. More so as these phones and messages cost more it signifies how much bills a person has or at least how they pr ioritise their spending. More meanings could be drawn from how often a person uses their phone and how many different people they know who can let picture messages.Barthes also wrote about Text itself and its semiotics, arguing that words are strong and can be used as political weapons, as they exhaust been in post World War II politics. He charts the beginning of the moment of the text as 1968 (Hartley 2002). This seems to have affected the whole of society as people now talk to each other less, preferring to e-mail or send text or picture messages. McLuhan has commented on discourse and text. According to a website called Marshall McLuhan spinning the web of the future, accessed 13/12/03 specifically, McLuhan feels that the best way to convey information between two people is to maximize the use of the sensestherefore ancient oral civilizations appeared to have the greatest and most clear form of communication. That is not the written word, but the spoken. This has, however, bee n criticised by Miller (1971) who disagrees with this assumption because he feels that clementity has evolved with technology and that this is not necessarily a bad thing. The reality is that further technological advances have given humanity the ability to communicate using mediums that are basically extensions of the spoken word.McLuhan expressed concern over the effects of technology and its result in the loss of human identity, although he did not see it as a bad thing, it was something to be maintained and supervised. His concerns could be justified, however, in that nowadays people talk to each other less, preferring to communicate by the written, or typed, word. Concern should plausibly not to be so extreme as to fear the breakdown of society but it has seriously affected how we communicate and what we now spend our money on. According to McLuhan in Understanding Media (1964) intense, hot media needs to be cooled off by our senses before it can be assimilated. Possibly the n the appeal of the text and picture message is that they are easier to take in on a sensory level. They are quick, take only seconds to read and write and enough cadence is given to process the information between each message and response. Radio and cinema act as an assault on the senses demanding that attention be remunerative in order to take it all in, although fewer gaps need to be filled. In two-way communication, however, it allows the user time to consider their response and therefore reduces the risk of exposure of saying something which one may regret later. If we put together the two theories of McLuhan and Barthes it is possible to achieve composite critique of the phenomenon of mobile technology. Although much of what was written by, particularly McLuhan, has been excessively criticised, some disregard it all together, he makes some points which are useful when examining this area of contemporary media and technology. Using McLuhan to explore the more technical aspec ts of text and picture messaging, suggesting why it may be so popular. Due to its being hotter than a normal telephone it is likely to be the next step in technology and its convenience makes it so popular. Also fact that it is cooler than other direct forms of media and allows more time and less information for the brain to process ensures it is easier on our senses. Its very presence has caused an upheaval in our society and we have taken the next cultural and technological step in our ever progressing break-dancement.Barthes, on the other hand, we can look to for inspiration in analysing the cultural aspects of such communication technology and what it means. Using his methodology of examining mobile phones for signs and signifiers many conclusions can be drawn. As phones differ widely in style and in what features they contain each person can be judged on the phone they own, or the phone they wished they owned. soulfulness who has a phone that looks good, rather than containin g many features is clearly saying something about the way in which they want to present themselves. Furthermore, a person who cares less about how the phone looks and more about what it does suggests something else. Most phones which contain more features, particularly a camera are usually larger and look less graceful than those with fewer features. Phones that can be used to record short pieces of film or watch videos on are bigger still yet there are already people who own them. Such people may be looking for a phone with more functional value, as thoroughly as their having an interest in gadgets. That said, however, we can assume they gain intrinsic pleasure from showing a person what their, apparently less attractive, phone can do. We could also assume that such people wish to be ahead of technology and enjoy being one of the first to own such items. burn down enough all young people own mobile phones and few would deny that they gain pleasure and enjoyment from them. Texting has become a common, everyday form of communication one that did not exist during the lifetimes of Marshall McLuhan or Roland Barthes and it can be assumed that neither would have anticipated this surge in technology. two would express concern at its immense popularity as it risks people becoming less sociable and having less actual conversation. Another side to that argument, however, could be that it increases human interaction, it just takes place in a different way. People can now contact their family, friends and acquaintances much easier and faster. To send a text message to say hello is far quicker and easier than making a phone call which could result in lengthy conversation. Whereas once a person may have decided against the phone call for that reason they exit now send a text message. It is probably safe to say that, given that human beings are an innately social species, and indulge in conversation for pleasurable as well as functional purposes that if what they desire is a conversation then that result be sought above a text message. It is hard to predict where society and culture will go with this ever increasing technological development. In the next year or so we can assume that videophone will become much more popular and that mobile phones will continue to develop into small computers than phones. Living in a century where convenience is emphasised and encouraged and our lives are busier it is likely that less face to face interaction will take place however with the help of the mobile phone we can avoid losing contact altogether.

How does William Shakespeare create tension Essay Example for Free
How does William Shakespeare create latent hostility EssayFrom the minute the period of play travels the auditory modality are aware that the star crossed warmthrs Romeo and Juliet are going to die, this makes it clear that the play is a tragedy. A Tragedy is a traditional form of firm where the main characters in the play die as a result of their tragic blot, for grammatical case in the tragedy play Macbeth, Macbeths vaulting ambition leads him to his death. Romeo and Juliets flaw is the powerful love between them and it gist their relationship has to be secret and this leads to Mercutio being killed by Tybalt and Romeo then killing Tybalt. The consequences of Romeo revenging Mercutios death by killing Tybalt means he is banished upon death. When the play was written Romeo and Juliet was already a well known story but the version that William Shakespeare borrowed did not include the love theme William Shakespeare added the love theme into the story. The play Romeo and J uliet was written in 1594, and in this time women particularly were under their parents influence and there was no free choice on who you could marry. adolescent Rebellion was unthinkable because your parents would kick you out and in this time a woman was unable to get a job and with no money it would be hard to find a husband this is why Romeo and Juliets marriage was secret. How a play is structured is an important way of creating tension for the interview like in Act 1 of Romeo and Juliet it introduces the theme of love and hate between the two families Montague and Capulet. There is also a fight between the two familys servants because they hate distributively other but Tybalt (Capulet) turns up and the fight becomes even bigger than before. The reason Shakespeare kills off Mercutio and Tybalt in Act 3 is that now all the action fucking focus on Romeo and Juliet. In the scene were Mercutio is slain, this point is often looked at as the points were the play becomes a tragedy. I f Romeo hadnt avenged Mercutios death the outcome would have been real different and Romeo and Juliets actions from this point are due to this scene.Having themes run throughout a play is some other way of creating tension for the audience. This scene (Act3 scene 1) contains the theme of passion, when Benvolio is advising Mercutio to earmark the area where the Capulets aregoing to arrive but Mercutio is ready for a fight and is going to stay no matter what.Benvolio says for now these hot-days is the mad dividing line stirring. This means that the hot hold out has shortened peoples tempers including Mercutios. When Tybalt arrives and Tybalt and Mercutio start to fighting. Romeo accidentally gets in the way and Mercutio is struck by Tybalts sword, it is a mortal wound which kills him. As Mercutio is end he says A plague on both your houses. After Mercutio dies and Romeo kills Tybalt, Romeo starts crying and this is a passionate cry emphasises the way he is losing the control of his destiny and is beat to fate. This creates tension because the audience know the final outcome from the start.Shakespeare was a master of characterisation, the characters in this scene have been skilfully created previously and act exactly how the audience expect them to, based on their previous behaviour, such as at the party Mercutio is installing off, he is loud full of himself and hot tempered this shows that it is Mercutios genius to fight and not back down. Also Mercutio cannot stand Romeos capitulation towards the Capulets and this angers him even more Mercutio also says O calm, dis honourable, vile, submission and this creates tension because Mercutio forces the fight on Tybalt. In a play which would be performed to an audience who could barely read and write, it was important for Shakespeare to include rich metaphors and poetry which would entertain and stimulate them his language is littered with deeper meanings and puns. For example when Benvolio says for now these h ot days the mad blood stirring this means that the hot weather has shortened peoples tempers and they are more likely to snap and start a fight, this line adds tension as well because there is going to be a big fight but Mercutios short snappy sentences show that he is ready to fight and it creates tension and anticipation to see Tybalt and Mercutio fight. The stage craft is a vital part of the tension in this scene where Shakespeare keeps the weather hot so it gets people irritable. Mercutio is in the mood for a fight because of the weather and he wants to cause tocause trouble. Shakespeare makes Tybalt arrive before Romeo so he has a chance to tangle and mix with Mercutio. Shakespeare only makes the reasons why Romeo wont fight Tybalt to make Mercutio angry about Romeos capitulation towards the Capulet Family. To conclude, I feel that Shakespeare created tension in this scene through Mercutios anger towards Romeos capitulation and his hatred for the Capulet Family. Although if Mercu tio had known about Romeo and Juliet his anger would not be so great. I found the play sad because two innocent characters had to die because of their flaw which was the powerful love between them which could not be broken and I also feel that another reason Romeo and Juliet died was the feud between the two families which was ended only when there children had died.
